Carrier AC Review: Should you buy it?

Have you ever heard of Willis Carrier? Willis Carrier invented the air conditioner in the year 1902, almost 118 years ago. So whenever you are feeling hot in the summer and want to make your house cooler, you can thank Willis Carrier. Carrier is an American brand that manufactures and distributes heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems (HVAC). Today, Carrier is a big brand in the international market and provides services to more than 170 countries around the world.

In 2012, Carrier tied up with a Chinese air conditioning manufacturers company Midea to get a hold of the Indian market. The joint venture resulted in Carrier Midea India (CMI) being formed. Despite joining hands, the companies still had their own individual identities and targeted their respective audiences. Carrier targets the elite customers while Midea targets the ordinary citizens of India.

At the moment it is a bit difficult to get a hold of the Indian market because 1) They are still comparatively new to the market when compared to brands who have been in the country for decades. It is, therefore, difficult for people to shift from their trusted brands. The second reason why the brand hasn’t got a hold in the air conditioning market is because the company sells products that are priced at a higher range, this effect the Indian consumers even though the quality of the product is high.

CMI offers a variety of products to air conditioner consumers, for commercial use, they offer the cassette and variable refrigerant flow systems and ducted flow. At the moment CMI manufactures and produces approximately 700,000 Air conditioners every year and has plans to create 1,000,000 air conditioners a year in the following years.

In this article of the Carrier Ac review, I hope to clarify some of the doubt you may have about the company. I have mentioned all the features that are present in Carrier ACs in this Carrier Inverter Ac Review.

Features Of The Carrier AC

In the below list, you will find features present in almost all Carrier Air conditioners.

1. Smart Air Conditioner

Carrier AC with Follow me mode and smart cool

Despite not having a hold in the Indian market, the consumers who have bought air conditioners from Carrier have praised the Cooling efficiency of AC. Carrier ACs have a technology which uses a form of hybrid cooling to cool your home; this is done by using air and refrigerants.

The compressor of Carrier AC uses the air cooling method, while the refrigerant pipe uses the refrigerant to the outside of the E-Box efficiently. These combine to provide the user with a cooling effect even at high temperatures that you might face.

The air conditioner also has a feature installed known as “Follow Me”. The remote that is provided to you when you buy the AC has a sensor installed. When the “Follow Me” feature is enabled the primary room sensor inside the AC unit stops while the sensor inside the remote gets activated. The AC adjusts the temperature of the room based on the information it receives from the sensor. The sensor placed inside the AC remote is capable of gathering information and sending the same data back to the main unit even from the furthest part of the room.

2. Refrigerant Leakage Detector

Refrigerants inside the AC can leak if the air conditioner has not been installed correctly, Air Conditioner has a factory defect or the AC has some external damage. Refrigerants such as Freon are toxic, and if it is inhaled in large quantities, it can leave the lungs and cells in our body without any oxygen. The leakage detector is, therefore, a very crucial part of the Carrier AC. The sensor in the Carrier AC will alert you about the leakage as soon as it detects the leakage, allowing you to call the company or an AC repairer to fix the issue.

3. Operates At low Voltage

Some parts of India face fluctuating Voltages which can go to as low as 195V. The Carrier Acs can work at this Voltage without the air conditioner switching off because of voltage fluctuations.

4. PM 2.5 and Anti-VOC Filter

Carrier AC Review with 2.5 Micron Air Purifier

The air is polluted with different microorganisms and pollutants and other health hazards such as the PM 2.5; the air is getting polluted because of the rapid rate of industrialisation. PM 2.5 consists of particles that are two and a half microns in width or smaller. These particles are emitted from cars, buses, trucks, construction equipment, wood, oil, grass fire etc. These emitted particles can enter from your nose and mouth and move their way into the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system.

These particles can cause a sense of irritation in your eyes and nose. It can also irritate your lungs and throat and therefore make you cough and sneeze. They can also cause long term effects such as a reduction in the functioning of the lung.

To prevent all these harmful particles from entering the body, the Carrier AC has a PM 2.5 and Anti-VOC filter. This filter doesn’t only help in removing harmful microorganisms from the air, but it also helps the AC in cooling the room better.

A few of the Carrier AC models come with a 4 in 1 filter. These filters are:

Carrier Air conditioners come with 4 type of filters for purification
  1. Cold Catalyst Filter: This filter helps in the removal of pollen, dust, dust mites and allergens.
  2. Vitamin C Filter: This filter helps in eliminating harmful substances from interacting with natural antioxidants.
  3. Bio Filter: This filter helps in trapping airborne particles such as Fungi and Bacteria.
  4. Nano Platinum Filter: This filter helps in the extermination of all the remaining bacteria, and other nano-sized organisms.

A few other models also come with anti-VOC filters that help in the removal of volatile organic compounds. Organic compounds that can easily convert to vapours and gases at room temperature are known as VOC. So why is having an anti-VOC filter important?  This filter is essential because when VOCs are combined with nitrogen oxides, they become hazardous. Some VOCs also impact the Liver, Kidney and nervous system.

5. iCleanser Self Cleaning

According to a study, if an ac unit is used every day for 6 months without being cleaned, the cooling capacity of the same unit can decrease by 50%. Since most of us keep forgetting to clean our ACs whenever we have the time, the iCleanser function becomes useful. This function is only available in premium models. When this function is active, the indoor unit operates in cooling mode with lower fan speed; this helps the condensed water remove all the dust from the fins of the evaporator. The AC then switches to fan mode to blow away the wet air. Besides the iCleaner function, the AC also alerts the user when the air conditioner has to be cleaned manually since the iCleaner can not remove the dust that has been collected in the AC.

6. 4 Way Swing

A regular AC can swing in two directions; it can either swing up or swing down. The Carrier ACs have 4 swings which you can now also find in the latest models of other brands. The 4 swing allows the vent to shift left and right while also allowing it to move up and down. This function allows the cool air released by the ac to go in all directions of the room.

7. Premium Copper Condenser

The condenser in the Carrier AC is made up of copper. A copper condenser has many benefits when compared to the aluminium condenser, which used to be used. A copper condenser is easier to clean and is more durable as well. The only downside of the copper condenser, when compared to the aluminium condenser, is that they are more expensive.

Usually, the coil of the evaporator accumulates a lot of dust. To help solve this issue, Carrier has come up with something known as the hydrophilic bluefin, which does not allow the water to condensate or accumulate quickly among high moisture levels. The bluefins also improve the heat exchange capability by absorbing water on their surface and spreading the water. While Carrier ACs are very much comparable to Daikin ACs, we recommend Daikin ACs because of their huge support chain and quality standards.

8. Auto Start Function

ACs of the previous generation Of ACs would get switched off and restart in factory settings in case of a power failure. The latest Carrier ACs have the auto start feature that lets the AC store the user setting so that AC resumes its previous function and starts automatically in case of a power failure. This is especially beneficial in areas where power cuts are frequent. This feature allows the user to sleep peacefully without having to wake up in his or her sweat.

9. Dehumidifiers

Humidity levels are always high in India and are at their peak during the monsoon season. A regular split AC can not manage to control the humidity level, which affects the cooling efficiency of the AC; in extreme cases, the humidity can also cause water leakage from the AC. Air conditioners that cannot handle the humidity use a lot of energy and therefore increase the electricity bill. During the rains, the AC can make the room temperature really low, making the user uncomfortable. Uncomfortable sleep may lead to the user having health issues such as sneezing, cough, headaches and can also be the reason for irritation and short temper.

To handle the humidity better, Carrier has come up with active dehumidifiers. The humidifier gets active when the smart sensors installed in the AC detect high levels of humidity in the air. This AC, therefore, helps the air in the room stay dry and fresh air without the stickiness, smell. Removing the humidity from the air also helps in preventing mould, mildews (a type of fungi) from causing health issues to us.

10. R-410 Refrigerant

A refrigerant is a substance or mixture, usually, a fluid, used in a heat pump and refrigeration cycle. In most cycles, it undergoes phase transitions from a liquid to a gas when absorbing heat and gas to liquid when a compressor compresses it. Fluorocarbons, especially chlorofluorocarbons, are being phased out because of their ozone depletion effects. Other common refrigerants used in various applications are ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and non-halogenated hydrocarbons such as propane.

Most of the air conditioners being sold by Carrier come with the 410 refrigerant. So, why is R-410 so important? R-410 is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) which means that it does not contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer as compared to the R-22. The R-410 can keep the compressor of the Carrier split AC cooler when compared to any other regular AC; this is because the refrigerant used in the Carrier AC (R-410) can absorb and release more heat than any other refrigerant.

The R-410A also has a wider operating pressure range which allows the compressor to handle more stress. All of these features or characteristics of the R-410 help the compressor of the AC last longer. Therefore, besides being more ecofriendly than other refrigerants, it is also lighter on your wallets as you won’t have to deal with the repair and maintenance cost of the compressor.

11. Inverter Technology

The previous generation of air conditioners either switched on or off. Regular split ACs had a regular compressor that powered the air conditioning cycle. In the 20th century, we created the Inverter compressor, which is the latest innovation in the air conditioning world. Carrier has now developed a Hybridjet Inverter Technology. This technology is like an accelerator; it gives the compressor more power when it needs it and provides the compressor with less power when it requires less power. This allows the compressor to stay on for a longer duration while also saving more energy than any other compressor. The speed and power of the compressor depend on the thermostat setting. This allows the Carrier AC to give optimum performance to its users.

12. Rust Free

Usually, the compressor of an air conditioner gets rusted after it has been used for a month or years, the duration depends on the conditions you live in, but it will get rusted at some point or the other. To prevent the AC from getting rusted, Carrier has 5 layers of a protective coating that can survive the heat, cold and rain. By doing this, the durability and life of the AC increases.

13. Another Reason To Buy Carrier Air Conditioners

When you use an air conditioner, you are also using electricity. Therefore the longer you use an air conditioner, the more electricity you are using which then gives you a massive electricity bill to pay at the end of the month. Carrier ACs can help you lower that amount despite using it for a more extended period. The following reasons are why Carrier ACs help you save money.

  1. The inverter technology in the Carrier split AC helps in saving 20-30% energy when compared to a non-inverter AC. (Check Inverter AC vs Non-Inverter AC for more information.)
  2. The copper condenser coil used instead of an aluminium one also helps in saving electricity. A copper condenser saves approximately 5% more energy when compared to the aluminium one.
  3. The R-410 refrigerant not only helps the environment by not harming the ozone layer, it also helps in saving energy. The AC emits less Carbon when compared to other air conditioning machines using regular refrigerants.
  4. As mentioned in the features section above, Carrier uses 5 layers of protective coating to prevent the AC from getting rusted. Preventing your AC from getting rusted, does not only save you money, but it also saves energy as the cooling efficiency of the AC decreases when it is rusted which is also the reason why rusted ACs consume more power.

I’m pretty sure that most of us have seen the star rating stickers that are attached to electrical products by BEE. Have you ever based your decision on the number of stars a product has? Well, some products are rated 5 stars by BEE (Find The Models Below), A five star rated 1.5 ton Carrier AC consumes approximately 871.07 units of electricity every year while air conditioners in India consume around 1400 units on average.

Conclusion

While most people are complaining about the cost of Carrier Air Conditioners, remember that their split ACs are some of the best you can find in the market. All the features I have mentioned above are proof of the quality of the AC. In this article, I have also mentioned a few products that I think you might like. Carrier has around 175 service centres in India, so I believe there shouldn’t be a problem if you do face any issues with the AC. If price if your concern, we recommend Llyod ACs in mid range as they offer lot of features at a lot lower price compared to Carrier.
